My name is Marie Backus, I am a graphic and web designer born in Germany where I studied 4 years of graphic design at a private school for visual communications in Freiburg and graduated in February 2005. I’m now at home in Boston, MA where I spend my time creating custom design pieces for small to medium sized businesses.

The Letter Eszett

The letter ß is a letter in the German alphabet. Its German name is Eszett [εs’tsεt] or scharfes S (sharp S).

The origin of ß from ſ (long s) and z is reflected in the name Eszett. It is nearly unique among the letters of Latin alphabet in that it has no traditional upper case form. This is because it never occurs initially, and traditional German printing (which used black letter) never used all-caps.
